Psychological Critic & The Learner & Historian

Psychological Critic:

Katniss: She is a hardened individual with a dislike for the Capitol. She is motivated to protect those she loves, especially Prim. She was forced into the providing role because her mother fell into a depression. When Katniss takes Prim’s place, she attempts to not show emotion in order to not appear weak. Even after she is selected for the Games, Katniss is still concerned with how her family will eat and survive. Katniss also appears to be motivated to do well in the games when she fights back against Haymitch on the train.
Gale: Gale does not like the Capitol and wants to leave his district. He is also motivated to survive because we see him break the law and hunt to provide for his family. Gale promises to help Katniss’ family to not starve. Gale is a survivor much like Katniss
Peeta:Peeta is a different type of character than Katniss or Gale. He readily shows emotion but he is also a fighter. Peeta, like Katniss does "not roll over and die" like some tributes might have when they are selected. Part one ends with Peeta either being overly emotional or making an extremely calculated move that might benefit him in the games. I cannot tell if Peeta wishes to survive himself, or if he wants to help Katniss as much as he can. As the book progresses, Peeta reveals just how cunning he his when he teams up with the "careers" to keep Katniss safe. When Peeta sustains his wound, he refuses to die because he wont be able to protect Katniss anymore.
Haymitch:He is not a very motivated person because he is used to tributes from 12 just giving up all hope, so he resorts to drowning himself in alchohol. when he realizes Katniss and Peeta want to try to win the games, he begins making strategic decisions and giving advice. Asthe book progresses, Haymitch shows he wants Katniss to survive and he understands what each powerful actions she makes in the arena will do to the Capitol and how to deal with them. This shows he is not just a drunk all the time. I think this is just a cover so he will not be bothered further by the Capitol.
Effie: she puts on a happy overly excited attitude in hopes she will be promoted to a better district
The Capitol:The games are introduced fro the first time and we begin to see the Capitol's motivation for holding them. The Games are held every year to remind the districts of the Capitol's power and to keep the districts rebelling. The capitol is a menacing force that knows the power of fear and uses it wisely.
Gamemakers:

Learner
Lessons I Have Learned

The gift of food: Katniss, being forced to hunt/scavenge for her food, very early in the book, shows how valuable food is. This first lesson is very fitting to the title of the book.

Value of Friendship: When Katniss meets up with Gale, she talks about how her worries melt away. A good friend can distract you from anything that is troubling in your life
Loyalty: When Katniss Steps up to take Prim’s place in the reaping.
Kindness: When the Baker tells Katniss he will not let her family starve and
Never Give Up:Katniss shows she has not given up when she takes the alcohol from Haymitch and demands his attention. Also when she is receiving her score for her skills, she does the unthinkable and shoots at the Gamemakers.
Power of Love: Peeta is motivated by love to protect Katniss at all costs and his onlty will to stay alive is because he wants to keep Katniss alive.
Trust: When Katniss forms an alliance with Rue, trust is a key issure becaus they both know only one of them can win.
Patience: Katniss shows patience when she does not rush anything during the book, and Haymitch, when he deals with Katniss's varying emotions and waits until the perfect moment to send anything into the arena
Compassion:The ability to have a relationship with someone, to be able to "love and be loved" and when Katniss befriends Rue the smallest of all tributes only because she reminds her of Prim, Also when Katniss gives Rue a burial of sorts in the arena, and of course her relationship with Peeta, I think Katniss had more compassion and love for Peeta than she shows in the book.

Stay strong: even in times of extreme hardship, Katniss pereseveres and continues to not give in but "stay strong"

Historian

The Captitol is a military dictatorship much like that of Kim Jong iI. In North Korea, Kim Jong iI regulated who could use the interent, monitored all phone calls, disregarded the health of his country, and forced poeple to work to make materials for his personal use. He oppressed those in his country so much, that they had no chance to gather and rebel.

Also, the Hunger Games is similar to the Olympics we hold today. All who participate, travel to a set location where they begin the games by parading in an arena, exactly like in the Hunger Games. Also if they win, They bring glory to whatever country or region they live in. Lastly, The games are similar to the gladiator fights in ancient Rome because you are forced to fight an unknown enemy in front of a huge crowd as entertainment.
