gasfsdaasd.jpgThroughout Mockingjay, media and propaganda are used profusely. In order to communicate to the rebels and lift their spirits, District 13 uses “propos” that fight the capitol over the airwaves. In any war, there is always a media war as well. Warring countries fight for support through political cartoons, images, stereotypes and videos. In order to sway the national opinion, truths may be stretched because without national human support there is no war. In the book, the media component to the war is Beetee VS. The Capitol over the airwaves, one side is trying to start the rebellion and the other is resisting. Depending on who gets what videos on air, it can change the tide of the war. In the end, Beetee wins the media fight because he is able to get the most meaningful propos on air and this helps the rebel support immensely.

In World War I or any war, propaganda is used to help the war effort. This is done by making your opponent look bad using secrets, stereotypes, and attacks on society’s pride. For example, In WWI, propaganda posters, such as the one above, Painted the enemy, in this case the germans, in a bad and evil light. It calls for U.S. citizens to donate money for war bonds and enlist by attacking men’s pride. If you were 20 years old in 1917 and did not enlist without a valid reason, you were looked down upon. Overall, Media influences a war almost as much as the actual fighting does.
Character analyst
Katniss (Mockingjay) is a confused young individual and at times throughout the book, she does not know what she wants. Sometimes she is focused on the bigger goal and killing Snow while on the other hand, she is caught up in small conflicts like fighting with Gale and messing with buttercup, Prim's cat. Overall, Katniss is the catalyst to the book and every single action is centered around her. She decides to be the Mockingjay to turn the tide of the war, and Katniss kills President Coin, which changes the course of Panem forever. The decisions she makes defines who she is.
Gale Wants death and destruction for those who hurt him and his family for all those years and this hatred blinds him to those around him. The want for revenge changes Gale from the character we first met in the first book.
Plutarch only wants a show, and to be able to say he was behind each great decision or footage. All he cares about is the fame he will receive from his work during the revolution.
Coin desires pristine conditions and perfect control at all times. Perhaps she is too cruel to rule Panem and Katniss realized it.
Peeta is mentally unstable throughout the book. I think Peeta is the measuring stick for Katniss’ sanity. When Peeta goes crazy, Katniss begins having mental breakdowns and is not herself any more, but as Peeta begins to return to normal, so does Katniss.
Pollux and Castor joined the revolution because they had been through extreme hardships in the capitol and want revenge for their early life. This hate helps them be the best camera operators for the job of filming Katniss’ propos.
Devil’s Advocate
Katniss- has head issues and has mental breakdowns very easily. She does not like to follow orders and this can have people killed. She has a soft spot for both Peeta and gale, which affect her decision-making abilities throughout the book. Finally, she is consumed at times for her hate of snow. This hatred causes her to make irrational decisions. These decisions including the one to track down snow on her own cause many people pain and death.
Gale- wants revenge too much, does not care for human life as long as it is Capitol people he is killing. This leads him to create a bomb exactly like the one that killed Prim. The question remains, was it his bomb that killed her, and if it was can it be considered that Gale killed Prim? I think yes it was his bomb and in a sense, he did kill Prim.
Peeta- needs to make a full recovery (not try to kill Katniss as a start) if he did not fully recover, I doubt that Katniss would be happy ever again.
Coin- needs to have perfect control and we see this when the prep team takes the bread and is punished. When Coin does not get what she wants, she sends a strong message to get her point across
Plutarch- likes a good show does not care for the safety of others as long as he gets good footage
Did prim really have to die? I think it was a clever way to end the story by making everything that could possibly go wrong, go wrong.
What would have happened if Katniss did not kill Coin? -I think Panem would have become a mirror image of what it was before
