Women's jobs are partly usual in the sense that they are similar to what jobs have been like in the past hundred years or so:
  • natural healers (plant gathering)
  • Prim's goat saved from the slaughterhouse and used for milk and cheese

But, women also perform physically straining jobs, just like the men of their district
  • coal miners of both gender in District 12 work to the point of "hunched shoulders, swollen knuckles, many of who have long since stopped trying to scrub the coal dust out of their broken nails, the lines of their sunken faces" (4).
  • the men and women of District 11 who work as farmers labor in the fields, harvesting crops
  • Katniss
  1. After her father dies, her mother withdraws from the world, most likely suffering from a mental illness due to the shock of losing such a beloved person. With no one to take care of the family, the weight of responsibility and parenthood is picked up by Katniss, who shoulders those burdens at the mere age of 11. In order to survive, Katniss hunts and collects edible plants.

An ant struggling with something much bigger than itself -- symbolizes Katniss's struggle after her father dies

However, society is mostly patriarchal
  • the father of the household is the figurehead of protection
  • President Snow is a male figurehead who controls Panem
  1. Is it just coincedence though that he is a male in power? Maybe

Anthropologist

Culture of Rome
  • the idea of throwing people into an arena and watching them fight to the death
  • all for entertainment
  • reasserts the emperor's power

Culture of Panem
  • the idea of taking tributes, putting them in an arena, and watching them kill each other
  • all for entertainment of people in the Capitol
  • reasserts the Capitol's power of the people of Panem

Represents the ruins of North America, and what it now has become

New Critic

Tesserae system
  • not really fair
  1. the poorer the person, the more times he or she signs up
  2. almost like a population control - keeping a balance between the different social hierarchies?
  • Prim being chosen was not a mind-blowing surprise
  1. in the beginning, Katniss is talking so much about Prim, it was just predictable that the young and innocent are always chosen
  2. but it was shocking when Katniss stepped up for Prim because we didn't know that the rules permitted someone to step in for the selected tribute

Peeta, a true gentleman
  • withdraws from Katniss before the Games
--to make it easier for both of them when he later joins up with the Careers
  • tells Katniss to avoid the cornucopia, but goes there himself
--he purposely intended to delay her from making it into the heart of the Cornucopia in order to save her from the brutality of the flood of Tributes
  • joins the Careers
--because he knew that the Careers would be after Katniss because of her score; so by being there, he could protect her if the time arose
  • tracker jacker incident
  1. saves Katniss from Cato
--because he cares about Katniss

Does Katniss struggle with trust/attachment issues?
  • all started when her father died: she needed her mother, but her mom couldn't be the solid, reliable figure that Katniss so desperately needed to keep her world from falling apart
  • joins up with Rue, who is from District 11
  • thinks about asking Foxface
  • seeks out and joins Peeta
  • is afraid to open herself up to Peeta because she is afraid of being burned again - she doesn't want her heart broken

alone.jpg
Symbolizes how Peeta gives Katniss hope and strength

  • eventually feels safe enough with Peeta that she lets him inside - she falls in love
  • when Peeta is injured, she's afraid that she'll be left all alone again
  • doesn't want to live without Peeta
  1. the rest of her life will be a nightmare of reliving the Hunger Games over and over that nobody will be able to understand

love.jpg
The love that Katniss and Peeta shares is burning with a passion for life

Defying the Capitol
  • very bold of Katniss to challenge the Capitol's power
  • flowers laid down around Rue, crowning her
  • the mockingjay symbol is a sign of failure in the eyes of the Capitol
  • the death berries
